Introducció i objectius: El mètode Pilates és un sistema dexercici ment-cos cada vegada més popular i reconegut en làmbit de lactivitat física encaminada a millorar la salut, però les evidències científiques, de moment, són escasses. Lobjectiu daquest estudi fou valorar i comparar la capacitat de força funcional en tres grups diferents: practicants habituals del mètode Pilates, practicants habituals de classes col·lectives de condicionament físic i sedentaris (practicants habituals = 2 dies a la setmana durant els darrers tres mesos consecutius). Mètode: La mostra completa comprengué 54 subjectes, 14,5% homes (n = 8) i 85,5% dones (n = 47), amb una mitjana dedat de 41,11 ± 7,75 anys. Tots el participants completaren la bateria de test Functional Strength Capacity Battery (Yeoman i Liebeson, 1996). Resultats: Es van trobar diferències significatives en el test desquat (F[2,51] = 4,67; p < 0,05) i en el test de força de lesquena (F[2,52] = 4,54; p < 0,05) entre els tres grups. Les anàlisis post-hoc indicaren que el grup que practicà Pilates tingué un nivell significativament més alt que el grup sedentari en dues proves: esquat (Pilates [M = 41,67; DS = 9,52] vs sedentari [M = 30,65; DS = 14,24]) i força-resistència desquena (Pilates [M = 158,52; DS = 56,92] vs sedentari [M = 115,04; DS = 34,58]). Conclusions: La pràctica regular del mètode Pilates sassocià a millors resultats en les proves de força funcional.

Introduction: Pilates is a mind-body exercise program gaining in popularity and acceptance by health and physical activity professionals, but there is a scarcity of scientific research. The aim of this study was to evaluate functional strength capacity between three groups: regular exercisers of Pilates Method, regular fitness class participant, and a non-exercisers group (regular exercise = at least 2 days per week for three consecutive months). Method: The total sample comprised 54 subjects, 14,5% men (n = 8) and 85,5% women (n = 47). The mean age of the sample was 41,11 (SD = 7.75) years. All volunteers completed the Strength Functional Capacity battery. Results: There were significant differences in squat test (F[2,51] = 4.67, P < .05) and back endurance test (F[2,52] = 4.54, P < .05) among the three groups. Post-hoc analyses showed that Pilates Method participants scored higher vs non-exercisers in Squat test (Pilates [M = 41.67; SD = 9.52] vs non-exercisers [M = 30.65; SD = 14.24]) and back endurance test (Pilates [M = 158.52; SD = 56.92] vs non-exercisers [M = 115.04; SD = 34.58]). Conclusions: Pilates Method is associated with good scores in the functional strength capacity battery.
