Introduction and objectives: There are few data on the incidence of sports injuries in master athletes. The main purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and type of injuries occurring during a Spanish Championship for Master Athletes in 2005. Methods: A statistical, descriptive study was performed by cause of injury. Among 996 participating athletes, there were 40 medical consultations (4.01%) and 26 (2.61%) physiotherapeutic interventions. Results: Forty patients were treated (82.5% men and 17.5% women). The most common lesions were muscle strains (55%) and muscle fiber ruptures (15%). Conclusions: Competition-related musculoskeletal injuries accounted for 95% of the lesions. Approximately 80% were localized in the thigh, and 53% in the hamstrings.
