Apunts Sport Medicine has been included in the Web of Science (WOS), Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) database for four years. ESCI is the database of journals that are in the process of evaluation for indexing in the main platform of the WOS itself (Core Collection).1
ESCI gives visibility to all publications during the evaluation process and makes it possible to see whether they have been cited and by whom, making the selection process more transparent.2
Our journal meets the basic criteria to be accepted in the ESCI: peer review, ethical publishing practice and content of high interest for the scientific community.3 Furthermore, Apunts is presented in electronic format and from next year, 2020, it will implement the new Article-Based Publishing [ABP] system. ABP consists of publishing articles directly in an issue without going through pre-publication of the article online, improving the speed of publication.
We believe that the work undertaken over recent years puts the journal in a very favourable position to be indexed. But one thing is lacking: our articles should be cited even more. Our scientific community's involvement with Apunts is high and viewed positively in the number of consultations and reception received by the articles that appear regularly through the year, but this does not correspond with the citations that it could generate. We think that this is because of our odd complex as non-English speaking authors when it comes to referencing the scientific production that appears in non-English speaking journals which, despite being of high quality, are often unjustly unnoticed.
We would encourage our authors to free themselves of complexes and cite the articles that Apunts Sports Medicine generate and that fit the rigour and focus of their papers. Let scientific reality overcome acquired complexes.
